Astolfi’s greenhouse

Inaugurated in November 2001, the greenhouse houses part of the rich collection of succulents (“succulents”) of the Botanical Garden. The specimens largely come from a private collection that belonged to a collector Paolo Astolfi (1943-2000) and donated, after his death, to the Botanical Garden. The greenhouse was completely renovated in 2003: masonry flower beds were built, using local stones (travertine), filled with suitable substrate (volcanic lapillus, pozzolan and soil), and a shading net was installed to mitigate overheating. Currently the collection shows a number of plants representative of the main succulent families, grouped by families and arranged in harmonious succession in order to achieve a good perspective view.

Among the species present there is a collection of Aeonium L. from the Botanical Garden of Essen (Germany), numerous species of Aloe L., several species of Euphorbia L., the genera Haworthia Duval, Gasteria Duval, Crassula L., and Kalanchoe Adans, and some succulents from Madagascar.

A rich collection of succulent plants (“cactus”) is present and is divided into several sections according to the type of management and placement: The Patriarchs’ Greenhouse, the Astolfi Greenhousewith specimens grown steadily in the greenhouse, the Desert, and the Rocky ridge.
